LA Tech Rallies to Defeat Montana State

Lady Techsters win 4-3, over Bobcats

TULSA, Okla. – The Louisiana Tech tennis team closed out the Hurricane Invite in exciting fashion, rallying to defeat Montana State by a final score of 4-3 on Sunday morning at the Case Tennis Center.

LA Tech (1-2) struck first in the match, taking the doubles point with victories on courts two and three.  However, Montana State (0-3) made a furious rally by winning the top three singles spots.

Down 3-1, the bottom of the lineup came through for the Lady Techsters with Claudia Oravcova, Alexia Romero and Andrea Perez-Lopez pulling out wins to give LA Tech its first dual win of the 2020 season.

"We did a great job responding with a win after dropping some tough matches yesterday," said head coach Amanda Stone.  "Montana State was a good battle and it was a great team win.

"It's important for us in this early part of the season to keep gaining confidence.  And hopefully today, the team really gained confidence in each other.  We competed well again at the top, but it was our depth and doubles that earned us the victory."

The doubles point was provided by Ana Jover and Oravcova who won 6-4 at No. 2 and Ilana Tetruashvili and Romero teaming up to win 6-2 at No. 3.

With three indoor courts available, the top three singles went on first and that was when the Bobcats grabbed the momentum.  They were able to win a couple of sets via tiebreaker and got all three wins by straight sets.

Then 4-6 took to the court and the momentum swung back in favor of the Lady Techsters, especially after Oravcova made quick work at No. 6 by overpowering Daphne Kaverkamp, 6-1, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Perez-Lopez and Romero were matching each other stroke for stroke and both ended up clinching their points at the same time.  Perez-Lopez needed three sets to do it, winning 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 over Caitlin Ward on court four and Romero outlasted JJ Chen by a final score of 6-3, 6-4 on court five.

Earlier in the morning, the Lady Techsters closed out its match with Wyoming by dropping the doubles point, making the final score, 5-1, in favor of the Cowgirls.

LA Tech will turn around and take on Oral Roberts on Monday with first serve starting at 9 a.m.
