LA Tech Takes Home Opener, 6-1

LA Tech improved to 2-3 on the spring season

RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech tennis team got off to a fast start on Saturday and never let up, coming away with a 6-1 victory over Nicholls State in the home opener at the Ruston Sports Complex.

LA Tech (2-3) made quick work grabbing the doubles point and got victories on five of the six singles courts, three of which finished with tiebreaker wins.

"It was a great day for the team," said head coach Amanda Stone.  "After fighting so hard last weekend, it was nice to get a decisive win today.  We started out really strong and played very good tennis in doubles and in the first sets of singles.  I'm proud of our players for finishing their matches and earning wins even after Nicholls fought back.

"We had a great fan base that we really fed off of.  We will look to build off this tomorrow and keep progressing."

The tandem of Ana Jover and Claudia Oravcova registered their third straight victory in doubles, winning 6-1 on court two.  Clinching the opening point by the same set score was the duo of Nadja Manjon and Andrea Perez-Lopez who got their first victory together on court one.

The Lady Techsters then got three straight-set wins in singles to clinch the match.  Making it 2-0 was Ilana Tetruashvili who had a decisive 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot over Lingfeng Gu.

The third point for LA Tech came from the No. 2 position where Jover bested Laura Lopez, 7-5, 6-4.  And providing the clincher was Alexia Romero who notched her third straight dual victory with a 6-1, 7-6 win against Mikaela Konstantinova at No. 4.

Courts one and six split the first two sets and came down to super-breakers, both going the way of the Lady Techsters.  Manjon secured a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (3) win at No. 1 and Oravcova took it 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (6) at No. 6.

Nicholls State (0-1) picked up its lone win of the day on court five in straight sets.

LA Tech will come back to the home courts tomorrow to face McNeese State.  First serve is set for 10:30 a.m.
