RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech men's basketball team will start the new decade on Saturday by hosting Southern Miss inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court with tipoff set for 4 p.m.
The matchup will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Doug Anderson and LaDarrin McLane calling the action. Fans can also listen to Dave Nitz and Jack Thigpen call the game on KXKZ 107.5 FM (Ruston), KOKA 93.3 FM/980 AM (Shreveport) and KJVC 92.7 FM (Mansfield) as well as on the LA Tech Athletics app.
LA Tech (10-3, 1-0 C-USA) ended the last decade by also playing Southern Miss. This meeting took place in Hattiesburg and resulted in a big 80-49 victory for the Bulldogs in the Conference USA opener.
The 31-point victory was the largest C-USA road win in program history and was the largest over USM since 1972.
The Bulldogs had one of their best shooting performances ever inside Reed Green Coliseum, shooting 48 percent from the field and 46 percent from beyond the arc. They hit 10 three-pointers, the eighth time this season they have drained 10+ in a single game. On the flip side, the Golden Eagles did not make a single three and were held to their fewest points in the series since 1949.
DaQuan Bracey led the charge with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. He made two of his three three-point attempts, bring his shooting percentage to 55.3 from downtown which ranks first in C-USA.
The senior guard currently leads the team in scoring average at 12.8 points per game, followed by Kalob Ledoux who is averaging 12.5 points per contest. The junior came off the bench to score 15 points versus the Golden Eagles.
It has been primarily defense though that has helped the 'Dogs win four straight and winners of six of their last seven. The team currently ranks 17th in the country in field goal percentage defense (37.5) and 24th in scoring defense (60.4). Both marks rank first in the league.
Southern Miss (4-10, 0-1 C-USA) has now lost seven of its last nine games. The Golden Eagles will be trying to win their first game away from Hattiesburg as they are 0-4 in road games and 0-3 in neutral site games.
Tyler Stevenson led USM in scoring this past Monday, notching 12 points to go along with six rebounds. It marked the fourth time this season he has been the team's leading scorer. The sophomore is second on the team in scoring average at 11.8 points, right behind Gabe Watson who is averaging 12.7 points.
Something else Southern Miss will be trying to do is win in Ruston for the first time since 1968. LA Tech has won the last 13 meetings in Ruston and are 5-0 in the series since the two teams became C-USA foes.
