AUSTIN, TEXAS – Louisiana Tech will face by far its toughest test of the young season Wednesday night when the Lady Techsters travel to Austin to face the 25
th ranked Texas Longhorns.
Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center and the game will be televised on the Longhorn Network.
Tech (2-0) is coming off a hard-fought 79-69 win over Grambling State Monday night in a game that saw the Lady Techsters overcome a scrappy Tigers team.
Head coach
Brooke Stoehr knows the challenge her team faces against Texas (2-0), a team averaging 98.0 points per game.
"It doesn't get any easier for us," said Stoehr. "It's our first road game. We have to have everybody ready. We need to lock in defensively. We have to be ready to go. I told the team after the (Grambling State game) you have another chance to compete. We are going to see who shows up to compete."
Texas is under the direction of new head coach Vic Schaefer, who comes to Austin after an impressive eight-year stint at Mississippi State where he led the Bulldogs to a number of Final Four appearances.
The Longhorns have opened the season by defeating SMU (90-51) and North Texas (106-69) and are led by 6-foot-5-inch post Charli Collier. Collier is averaging 34.5 points and 14.0 rebounds per game while shooting 73 percent from the field and 94 percent (23-24) from the free throw line. She scored 44 points in the win over North Texas.
"Texas has a great inside presence in Charli Collier and some very athletic perimeters," said Stoehr. "We have to be able to take care of the basketball against their full-court pressure and play with some poise offensively. We have to challenge ourselves defensively and get out and defend."
Tech is led by
Keiunna Walker (16.5 ppg), Bre Harris (12.5 ppg), and
Raizel Guinto (12.0 ppg) offensively.
The Lady Techsters are 8-3 all-time against Texas, including a 4-1 mark in games played in Austin. Tech is 6-0 all-time against the Longhorns in the NCAA Tournament.
The contest can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on 99.3 FM or on the Louisiana Tech Athletics mobile app.
