EL PASO, Texas – Louisiana Tech opens defense of its Conference USA regular season title this weekend when the Lady Techsters travel to Helen of Troy Softball Complex for a three-game, three-day series.
This marks the inaugural season that Conference USA has moved to a three-day league series with one game each day. In the past the three-game series were played in two days.
Friday's opening game is at 7 p.m. CT while the two teams will play Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
The Lady Techsters (6-15, 0-0 C-USA) are coming off a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Lamar on Wednesday in Beaumont, Texas. Tech trailed 3-1 before plating four runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning, including Mary Terral's second home run of the season.
Tech has won three of its last five games after opening the season with just three wins in its first 16, a sign that the Lady Techsters are starting to jell. Zoe Hicks (.351, 4-5 SB), Madie Green (.259, 2 HR, 3 RBI), Marilyn Rizzato (.245, 3 HR, 10 RBI), and Lindsay Edwards (.203, 3 HR, 8 RBI) are Tech's top offensive threats through the first 21 games.
In the circle, Tech will turn to four arms for the weekend series, including Audrey Pickett (4-6, 3.34 ERA), Bre Hernandez (2-7, 4.75 ERA), Hannah Koenig (0-1, 5.58 ERA) and Jenny Chapman.
UTEP (4-15) has gotten off to a slow start as well. The Miners have dropped five straight, being outscored 42-1 in those contests.
Kasey Flores (.315, 7 HR, 12 RBI) and Ilena Santos (.292, 6 HR, 18 RBI) are the Miners top offensive threats.
In the circle, UTEP is led by Isabella Kelly (3-8, 6.31 ERA) and Zaylie Calderon (1-3, 6.42 ERA) as the staff ERA sits at 8.67.
