THIBODAUX, La. – Louisiana Tech overcame chilly conditions and a physical opponent on Sunday, picking up its third straight shutout with a 1-0 victory against Nicholls State at Yockey Bernard Field.
Â
LA Tech (5-2) peppered the opposing net, outshooting Nicholls State (0-3) 23-4 and generating seven corner kicks. It was not until almost midway into the second half that
Klesha Darroux connected for the game-winning goal.
Â
"We overcame some difficult weather conditions to get the win," said head coach
Kevin Sherry. "A narrow turf field is always going to be difficult to play on and with a biting wind blowing, it made it even more of a problematic game. I am proud of the team for the way withstood the conditions and competed to the very end."Â
Â
The Lady Techsters were in full control in the first half, getting shot attempts from six different players. One of those was Darroux who missed wide on back-to-back shots. Despite this, and only allowing one shot by the Colonels, the match was nil-nil at halftime.
Â
The ambush continued in the second period, but the Nicholls State defense stood tall.Â
Â
That was until the seventh and final corner kick of the day for LA Tech delivered a result. It came in the 65th minute with
Sophie Fijneman taking the free kick. The sophomore sent it into the box where Darroux planted the one-touch finish inside the near post.Â
Â
This duo tag-teamed for LA Tech's first goal of the spring slate, which came in the home opener. For the senior Darroux, it marked the fourth goal of her career and the second of the 2020-21 season. She now leads the team with five points.Â
Â
The Lady Techster defense allowed just four shot attempts on the day as six players went the full 90 minutes.Â
Katie Cook got the start in net and registered her second win (both via shutout).
Â
LA Tech will have a one-day break before playing at Spring Hill on Tuesday, Feb. 16. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
