JACKSON, Miss. – Newcomers for Louisiana Tech saw plenty of action on Tuesday night versus Belhaven and it was three freshmen netting goals in the 3-0 victory at Belhaven Soccer Stadium.
Â
Maci Geltmeier and
Morgan Bean found the back of the net in the first half. Then late in the second period,
Alma Cedefors added a third goal for a LA Tech team that dominated possession most of the night.
Â
"It was a good for a lot of the squad who do not usually get a lot of minutes," said head coach
Kevin Sherry. "It was an opportunity for players to impress and push themselves forward for future playing time. We are grateful to Belhaven for agreeing to play us."
Â
It only took 41 seconds for the Lady Techsters to strike. Geltmeier took advantage of a rebound from a miscontrolled ball by a defender, taking a right-footed shot from 12 yards out and sending it into the top corner.
Â
It was the freshman's first collegiate goal, just like
Morgan Bean who delivered goal No. 2 for LA Tech in the 33rd minute. From the midfield,
Kalli Matlock sent a through ball to the left corner of the 18. Â That is where a charging Bean beat the keeper to the ball and shot it into the open net with her left foot.Â
Â
Prior to halftime, freshman
Alma Cedefors nearly made it 3-0, but her shot from 25 yards away clanked off the crossbar. She would get her first collegiate goal as well though in the 73rd minute, firing in a header from the top of the six after the cross from the right flank by
Nicole Fels.Â
Â
LA Tech totaled 27 shots on the night, 15 coming on goal, as well as nine corner kicks. Geltmeier led the team with eight shots while
Alpine Williams had four. Â Â
Â
Maggie Boston got her third start of the season in goal, recording her three shutout.Â
Â
Next up for LA Tech is a road match at UT Tyler on Friday, Feb. 12. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
