Lady Techsters Leave San Antonio with Victory Over UTSA

EL PASO, Texas -- After a loss Friday night against UTEP, the Louisiana Tech volleyball team bounced back and defeated UTSA 3-0 (36-34, 28-26, 25-18) on Sunday at the Convocation Center.

LA Tech (8-10, 2-2 C-USA) turned the weekend around by defeating UTSA (6-8, 1-1 C-USA) in a 3-0 sweep. The first set was nothing shy of thrilling. The Lady Techsters went back and forth with the Roadrunners throughout the entire set. LA Tech collected half of their service aces on the day in the first set with three from Andrea Spasojevic and one from McKenzie Johnson. Along with her three aces, Spasojevic finished with five kills in the first set to pair with five from Carla Esquer and Chard'e Vanzandt.

The Lady Techsters took an early lead in the second set after a 3-0 scoring run produced by two Roadrunner errors and a kill from Spasojevic. LA Tech continued to add to their lead until UTSA came back with a 6-0 scoring run late in the set to tie the game 23-23. The Lady Techsters did not settle and finished the set on back-to-back-to-back kills from Morgan Smith, Jaena Bell, and Spaojevic to capture the victory.

In the third set, the Lady Techsters were not going to give UTSA a chance to force a fourth set. Tied at 7-7, LA Tech produced a 5-0 scoring run from four Roadrunner errors and a kill from Kalee Cadwell to bring their lead to 12-7. With their momentum high, the Lady Techsters kept their lead throughout the set to take the final set 25-19.

QUOTABLES
Head Coach Amber McCray

"The grit this team showed to grind out the first two marathon sets was beyond incredible. We had so many people step up for us today to contribute to this win. Our middles, Imana and Morgan, were huge offensively in critical moments and anchoring our ability to out block UTSA 13-7. Jaena Bell was clutch getting big-time stops for us against their primary hitters all match long. Offensively, Carla and Andrea led us in kills by staying aggressive and continuing to take risks even in tight moments. I was also very pleased with the overall distribution by our setters, Ashley and Kalee, to put our attackers in good positions to score. And last but definitely not least, our defensive corp battled to control our first contact and keep giving us chances to terminate the rally. UTSA is such a tough place to play with the band and crowd they always bring, so coming in and getting this one is an extremely significant win for our program."
