Bulldogs Fall to Bears

LA Tech drops 3-0 contest to Baylor in Waco

WACO, Texas – The Louisiana Tech Soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to Baylor on Thursday night at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.

It was a nil-nil game for much of the first half between LA Tech (2-2-1) and BU (2-1-1).  For the Bulldogs, it was freshman goalkeeper Emma Duguay keeping the Bears off the scoreboard with save after save, including a diving stop to her right and a 1v1 win off her line.

With only two minutes left before intermission, the Bears took advantage of a defensive mistake by LA Tech.  Theresa McCullough broke free from the midfield and got the angle into the left side of the box where she crossed it through traffic to a charging Ashley Merrill who drilled the one-touch shot into the back of the net from the top of the six.

A similar situation unfolded for LA Tech just one minute later in the 45th minute when the Bulldogs were challenging in their attacking third.  Senior Tomoyo Kuroyanagi ended up with possession close to the end line, crossing it into the box where Flavie Dube's one-touch shot was denied by a diving save from the Baylor goalkeeper.

Baylor added to its score in the 56th minute when Jenna Patterson was able to dribble around a sliding tackle and Duguay's challenge off her line.  The Bear found space and slotted a right-footed shot under the crossbar.

Their third goal came in the 65th minute as Tyler Isgrig drilled a low liner just past the diving reach of Duguay from the top of the 18.

QUOTABLES
Head coach Steve Voltz

"I am pleased with how we competed.  Credit to Baylor, they are a very good team.  We can take a lot of lessons away from this game.  We had good chances in the first half, but we have to get smarter.  We continue to do the same thing, getting punished for our mistakes and not punishing our opponent when we have opportunities.  At the end of the day, it was a good effort and we get to do it again on Sunday against another team of this level."

NOTABLES
  • With the loss, LA Tech now trails the all-time series versus Baylor, 1-0, as the two teams met for the first time.
  • Emma Duguay was credited with eight saves, the most by a LA Tech goalkeeper this season.
  • Josie Studer played the full 90 minutes, marking the 46th time in her career she has gone the distance in a match.
  • Madita Ehrig played the entire match for the first time in her collegiate career.
