Smith Adds CUSA Outdoor Title

EL PASO, Texas — After winning the Conference USA Indoor Championship in the long jump in February, Mateo Smith made it a sweep with the Outdoor Championship on Friday at the CUSA Outdoor Championship at Kidd Field.

Smith was sitting in fourth after his first three attempts and looked to make a move up the standings. Smith leaped 7.48m (24'7'') on his next jump to take over the lead. UTEP's A'Tiq Muhammad would get close on his fourth jump at 7.41m (24'3.75''), but no one else would come close on the last two attempts.

Smith became the second Bulldog in the long jump to win the Indoor and Outdoor Championship in the same season, joining Bryant Wesco, who had done it twice in 1997 and 1998.

William Estes made the most out of his first attempt with the javelin. Estes picked up a bronze medal starting with a 52.09m (170'10''). Corbin Gann just missed the podium in fourth with a throw of 51.56m (169'2').

Jenna Gibson, Maria Ferreiro Pena, DaLoria Boone, and Tia Reder picked up points for the women.

Gibson and Ferreiro Pena finished sixth and seventh in the javelin at 43.02m (141'1'') and 42.19m (138'5''), respectively. Boone and Reder added four points in the long jump with distances of 5.83m (19'1.5'') and 5.82m (19'1.25'').

Eleven Bulldogs qualified for the finals in the 100mH, 110mH, 400m, and 100m, which will occur on Sunday.

All three LA Tech athletes in the 100mH qualified for the finals. Tonie-Ann Forbes ran a 13.13 to finish second in her heat and claim the Q. Kionnah Weaver finished right behind with a 13.46, and Nike Praetzel ran a 13.69.

Urijah Williams made it four-for-four in the short-distance hurdles, running a 14.23 in the 110mH to qualify for Sunday.

Osaretin Usenbor (54.58), Jamara Patterson (55.09), and Cullen Hronek (48.63) qualified for the finals in the 400m.

Rodney Heath Jr. continues to be one of the fastest in the country in the 100m. Heath Jr. would claim the top spot in heat three with 10.09 seconds, his second consecutive time under 10.1.

Quoi Ellis (10.11), Karo Oghomi (10.17), Shatalya Dorsett (11.53), and Tonie-Ann Forbes (11.58) give the Bulldogs more opportunities to score points on Sunday.
