Louisiana Tech closed out a three-match home stand to open the year with a shutout victory over in-state rival UL-Lafayette, 2-0, at The Mack Thursday night.
Peyton Wiseman opened the scoring on a rebounded assist from
Madison Pensom before
Shani Sirota netted the brace on a rocket from nearly 40 yards out dished from
Alexandria Weatherspoon.
Thursday's win marked the program's 100th all-time victory on the home pitch.
The Bulldogs have struggled in recent history when facing the Jaguars, having dropped the previous three clashes and being shut out in each of them. LA Tech has not scored a goal against South Alabama since a 1-1 draw on September 9, 2012, in Mobile and have not earned a winning decision since a 4-0 victory in Ruston on August 19, 2011.
Tech currently has five separate goal scorers, four of which have been assisted on with Pensom dishing two of the team's four assists thus far. Pensom is the first Bulldog since
Emma Jones in 2023 to record an assist in consecutive matches.
Previewing the Jaguars
South Alabama is led by head coach Chris Hennessey, who is in his second season at the helm of the Jaguars' women's soccer program. Hennessey, native of Manchester, England, came to Mobile after leaving behind a dominant legacy at his alma mater Lee University, posting a 130-31-21 record along with eight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.
Hennessey led the Lady Flames to a pair of Sweet 16 appearances (2016, 2018) and a Final Four appearance (2018), as well as clinching three Gulf South Conference championships and being named GSC Coach of the Year in 2021 after leading Lee to a 19-0-1 record that season.
The Jaguars are 1-1 to open the season, suffering a 2-0 loss to LSU in Baton Rouge to open the season before bouncing back with a 2-0 victory at home against Tennessee Tech. South Alabama was forced to cancel their scheduled match with Samford on August 21 due to inclement weather.
Melina Descary and Andrea Iljkic were the goal scorers for the Jaguars in their win over the Golden Eagles with assists coming from Sofia Ferrante and Victoria Rocci. Midfielder Bonnie Frost and defender Amelia Campanella are the lone Jaguars to have not been subbed off this year.
Jaidin Kinch has been the mainstay in goal for the Jaguars since taking over for Sierra Giorgio in the 29th minute of the LSU match. She has three saves and has allowed two goals on 14 shots faced, earning the clean sheet against Tennessee Tech.
