A pair of gutty goals in the final 20 minutes gave Louisiana Tech its first road victory of the season and in CUSA play.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A late pair of gritty goals by the Bulldogs within the final 20 minutes of Saturday night's match secured a 2-1 win on the road over the New Mexico State Aggies at the NM State Athletic Soccer Complex.
The 'Dogs (3-11-1, 2-3 CUSA) and the Aggies (1-11-3, 0-1-3 CUSA) exchanged attempts on target within the first five minutes of the contest, with freshman Reagan Roberts taking the first shot of the night for Tech.
Freshman Ansley Ittel knocked away four shot attempts within the first 17 minutes, holding strong to keep New Mexico State off the board early.
Redshirt freshman Annie Meador added a second shot on goal in the 37th minute before the Aggies would take a first-half lead two minutes later on netting the ball in the lower right corner.
New Mexico State added two more shots in the 40th minute before Meador closed the half with a shot in the final 90 seconds.
The Bulldogs looked for the equalizer out of the halftime break with a pair of shots taken within the first seven minutes of the second half.
Freshman Avery Jacobs eventually broke through for Tech with an equalizer in the 71st minute for her first career score.
The freshman defender's score came on a long cross to the back post where she was sitting, delivering a soft shot to her opposite side and into the net.
Just four minutes later, Jacobs dished her first career assist to junior Shani Sirota, who had enough space to take a shot and give the Bulldogs the lead on her second goal as a Bulldog and third of her career.
Sirota's score came on a soft grounder pass to the middle from Jacobs, where the Akron transfer fired a shot off the post and ricocheted into the net.
With Saturday's result, the Bulldogs snap a three-match losing streak and earn their first road win of the year. This is also the first time Tech has secured a comeback victory after trailing at the half as well as their first weekend win.
Ittel picked up her first career win as a keeper, posting a career-high nine saves on 21 shots faced. Meador was the only Tech player with multiple shots, and Jacobs and Sirota scored on their lone attempts of the night.
The Bulldogs continue their road span on Thursday, October 16 when they travel to Springfield, Missouri to face the Missouri State Bears for the first time as CUSA opponents. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
Head Coach Steve Voltz following the Bulldogs' win over New Mexico State:
"This is only a surprise to people who don't know the women on our team, but this doesn't surprise me. This team has worked so hard all year, and tonight showed that it is starting to pay off. What a comeback for our team—we showed ample fortitude down the stretch when it mattered the most in a tough environment on their Senior Night. This win is huge for us at this point of the year with three matches left, and I couldn't be more happy or proud for our women that their hard work is paying off. Now we keep going—we have another big road test coming up against Missouri State next week, and we'll be prepared for the next challenge fighting for a playoff spot."
