NORMAN, Okla. – The Bulldogs fell to the No. 20 Oklahoma Sooners, 3-0, Thursday night at John Crain Field in Norman.
In the second minute,
Reagan Roberts served a pristine through pass along the sideline to Grace Clay which eventually led to the first corner of the evening, but Oklahoma's back line stood tall and forced a turnover before Tech could get a shot off.
The Sooners struck first in the 11th minute after properly executing a counter attack with a through ball and a cross pass to jump to a 1-0 lead.
Later in the half with just over five minutes to go, OU served a corner that looked like a good opportunity to double the advantage, but a handball was called on a Sooner to put a halt to the attack.
After six minutes passed, the Bulldogs looked to get a pass into the box that was deflected out by a Sooner defender. After a misplayed ball at midfield, OU countered down the middle of the field to double their advantage in the 52nd minute.
The Sooners capped off the scoring in the 65th minute after a cross was served to the box, finding an incoming attacker to place a header in the top shelf on the right side of the net.
Defenders Mary Helen Burford and
Alexe Drolet were the only two non-keeper players to play the full 90, and
Peyton Wiseman took the lone shot of the night for the Bulldogs.
LA Tech continues its road trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma to face Oral Roberts on Sunday, August 31 at 1 p.m. CT.
Steve Voltz following Thursday night's match:
"I thought there were a couple of moments in the first half we could've done something, but they just out-athlete you, they outrun you, they lumber forward and wait for us to make a mistake and unfortunately, we got caught in a transitional moment in the first half. We didn't have a lot of options but the ones we did have we need to be more diligent. Super proud of our fight tonight, how we competed and how we held up against a very physical, athletic team. We're never satisfied when we go on the road and give up a result, whether it's the 20th-ranked team in the country or somebody else. So, from that standpoint we expect more, we expect to be a little tidier in the way we defend and just have to be a little technically cleaner. But as far as the standard of our competitiveness, super happy and proud of our group."
