LA Tech Drops Midweek Tilt To Warhawks In Monroe

The Bulldogs have consecutive losses to ULM for the first time since 2023.

MONROE – The Diamond 'Dogs (27-19, 14-7 CUSA) saw their three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night, falling to ULM (24-21, 10-11 Sun Belt), 16-3, in seven innings at Lou St. Amant Field in Monroe.

ULM jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first, beginning the frame with a pair of leadoff singles and a two-run double from the third batter of the frame. A second two-run double and a two-run single capped off the opening frame before a fielder's choice RBI and back-to-back RBI knocks in the second grew the Warhawks' lead to nine runs.

A two-run double, two-run homer and an RBI single gave the home side a 14-0 lead through three innings before tacking on two more in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.

The 16 runs allowed to ULM are the most the 'Dogs have allowed against the Warhawks since 1999, when ULM won 18-8 over Tech in Ruston. The 19 hits allowed are the most by Tech since May 26, 2024, giving up 21 hits to DBU in the CUSA Tournament Championship Game.

The Bulldogs eventually struck the scoreboard in the fifth, which began with Trey Hawsey drawing a walk and Colton Coates with a single on a 3-2 count. Eli Berch followed up with driving in the first run of the night for Tech on a sharp line drive to the left center gap. Coates then made it a 16-2 game scoring on a wild pitch from third.

The gap was closed to 16-3 in the sixth with Matt Houston's seventh homer before the Bulldog backstop made it a 16-5 score with a two-out two-run homer in the seventh before the contest ended in a run rule victory in favor of the Warhawks.

With Tuesday's loss, the 'Dogs have consecutive losses to ULM for the first time since the 2023 season.

The Bulldogs return to CUSA play on the road with a three-game slate at DBU in Dallas, Texas. The series opener at Horner Ballpark is set for Friday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Head Coach Lane Burroughs:
"Our hitters kept fighting all night long, but it's hard to put together good at-bats when you can't get a zero on the other side. For our hitters to continue to battle like they did, I was very proud of them for that. Matt Houston came in and hit two balls out of the ballpark. We still had 10 hits in a shortened game. We just need to get a better start. It was one of those nights where everything they hit fell. We came off an emotional weekend where we played really well, won some tight games, and then you've got midweek college baseball. If you're around this game enough and at a high level, these kinds of nights happen. The main thing we have to do is put it behind us and move forward, because we have another big weekend in front of us."
