DALLAS – The Diamond 'Dogs (27-20, 14-8 CUSA) opened up the weekend with a 4-1 loss to Dallas Baptist (27-19, 15-7 CUSA) Friday night at Horner Ballpark in Dallas.
Trey Hawsey extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a one-out single in the third, now holding the longest hitting streak by a Bulldog since Cole McConnell's 17-game hitting streak during the 2024 season.
Declan Dahl put on another quality display on the mound, tossing seven innings with nine punchouts. The Azle, Texas native allowed just two runs on three hits and a walk, along with posting his sixth consecutive outing with at least five innings pitched and seven strikeouts.
Despite his terrific outing, Dahl suffered his first losing decision since March 27 after posting a perfect 3-0 record in the month of April.
The 'Dogs were out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame, starting off with singles from
Colby Lunsford and
Colton Coates before
Eli Berch drove in the first run of the contest with an RBI groundout. A one-out walk in the second, a one-out single in the third and a leadoff knock in the fifth would be the only baserunners Tech would produce for the remainder of the game.
The Bulldogs would hold their lead for just one frame with DBU taking a one-run lead in the second with a leadoff knock and a homer two pitches later. The Patriots would hold steady with a 2-1 lead for the next five full frames before doubling their score with a second two-run blast in the eighth.
A pair of groundouts were induced, bringing the 'Dogs just one out away from maintaining a single-run deficit going into the final frame. DBU drew a walk on a 3-2 count before a back side round tripper gave the home side a 4-1 advantage with just three outs left to get.
Game 2 of the series is set for Saturday, May 2 at Horner Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
Quotables
Head Coach Lane Burroughs:
"If you're a pitching aficionado, tonight was the game to see. Two guys going at each other—Friday night college baseball. It's what it's supposed to look like. I thought we came out in the first inning and took some good swings—it was really the only inning we threatened all night. Their guy was different out of the stretch than in the windup, and we couldn't get him back in the stretch much for the rest of the night. Sometimes you've got to tip your cap to their guy, and he was good tonight. Our guy was good, too. I thought Declan was outstanding. He pitched his tail off. I've said this about three or four times this year—he deserves a better fate. He gave us all he had. Credit to Chayton Krauss—he's been here for a while and is a really good hitter for them, and he got one pull side and hit it out, and then credit to Jake Bennett for driving one out in the eighth. Two guys that have double-digit homers—we talked about it before the game, but we have to keep the ball in the yard. They did it tonight and got two good ones on us."
