Josh Creech is in his first season as part of the LA Tech football program, serving as the Linebacker’s coach.
Creech comes to the Bulldogs after serving as the Defensive Coordinator at Midway High School in Waco, Texas. Under his guidance, nine players were selected All-District with Safety Landon Whisenton earning District Defensive MVP. The Panther defense had the best statistical season in the previous five season; leading all opponents faced in point per game at 18.0 PPG, holding opponents to just 310 total yard per game, and limiting passing attacks to 141 yards per game.
Creech served two seasons at TCU during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In 2023, Creech mentored Namdi Obiazor, who in his first-year transitioning from safety to linebacker for the Frogs led the defense in both tackles and sacks. Creech mentored Obiazor along with Jamoi Hodge and Shad Banks to Big 12 Honorable Mention honors.
During the 2022 season, the Horned Frogs had a magical run to the National Championship game during Creech’s first year in Funky Town. The Frogs defeated Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl to earn a birth in the College Football Playoff Championship game. During that game Dee Winters took home Defensive Player of the Game for his performance. Creech helped mentor Dee Winters to 1st team All-Big 12. Dee Winters led all Big 12 linebackers in Sacks that season. The Linebacker crew that year also featured Johnny Hodges who was Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. All three of the starting Linebackers during the 2022 season were named Phil Steele All Big 12.
The Horned Frog defense ranked #1 nationally: Improvement in Points/Possession allowed from the previous season. The Linebacker improved in sacks from the previous season going from two (2021) as a group to 16 (2022). They also improved in TFL’s going from nine (2021) to 31 (2022).
Before TCU Creech coached across the Battle for the Iron Skillet rivalry at SMU. Creech spent 4 years on the Hilltop as a part of a staff that accumulated a 40-17 record in four seasons - the most in the state of Texas during that time and most wins for the program since the Pony Express days. Creech worked with the linebackers during the 2018 & 2019 seasons before moving to the back end to work with the safeties in 2020 & 2021.
In 2019, Creech was part of a defense that ranked No.1 in the FBS for sacks per game at 3.92 and in the top three in tackles for loss at 8.5. The Mustangs forced 21 turnovers in 2019, ranking 34th nationally and fourth in the conference. The number included 12 fumble recoveries, which ranked in the top 10 of the FBS.
Creech helped mentor all-conference selection Pat Nelson, who set SMU’s single-season sacks record with 12.0 in 2019. In 2018, Creech helped mentor Richard Moore who earned AAC honorable mention after registering 92 tackles, 13.5 TFLs and had a team-leading 5.0 sacks.
Creech came to the Hilltop after a four-year stint as Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach at Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi. During his time with the Blazers, Creech saw 10 of his players recognized as All-NCCAA selections.
Prior to his time at Belhaven, Creech was Assistant Head Coach working with Linebackers at McMurry University (2011-14). He helped guide the 2012 team to a win in the Heart of Texas Bowl, and the 2011 team to the best record in school history at 9-3.
Creech graduated from Sam Houston State in 2008 with a degree in criminal justice, and went on to earn a master’s in national security from the University of New Haven in 2010, where he was also a volunteer coach working with linebackers.
Creech and wife Emily have three children: Adelaide, Willie and Isla Grace.
