RUSTON, La. - Former Louisiana Tech track and field All-American Olivia McKoy won the Jamaican National Championships in the javelin in Kingston July 20 to earn a spot on the 2000 Olympic Squad.
McKoy, who earned her All-American honors in 1998 and 1999, set a national record with a toss of 188-feet, 3 inches, breaking her own mark.
McKoy will compete in the Olympics in Sydney, Australia, in September.
Melissa Gibbons, a sophomore on the Tech track team this past season, placed first in both the shot put (45'10") and discuss throw (170'3") at the Jamaican National Championships.
Following that performance, Gibbons represented Jamaica at the North American Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships in Monterey, Mexoico, Aug. 3-6, and placed second in the discuss (160'8") and third in the shot put (48'5").
Gibbons led the Lady Techsters to the 2000 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship title this past season, capturing the individual titles in the shot put.
