Techsters play .500 softball at weekend tournament
Lady Techster softball (7-20) finished the two-day Panther Spring Classic Softball Tournament with a 2-2 record after splitting Sunday against Troy State and Birmingham-Southern with scores of 1-4 and 3-0 respectively.
In game one sophomore Brittany Stanley was able to single in freshman Mary Cohn for a Techster run but the offense could produce little else in a 1-4 defeat at the hands of Troy State.
"We had scoring opportunities throughout the game, we just couldn't push anything across," head coach Sarah Dawson said.
Marla Pinkston (4-7) pitched a complete seven innings allowing four runs (two earned) while striking out three.
In game two a trio of Techster hitters had strong days as Tech shutout Birmingham-Southern by a score of 3-0.
Freshman Bridget Broadnax had two hits and a RBI while Cohn added a double and a RBI. The Techsters' biggest blow came when junior Erin Chernicky hit a solo homerun in the contest, her first this season.
Freshman Kristin Rupp (3-10) picked up the win throwing seven shutout innings allowing only five hits and striking out three.
"(Rupp) did a good job," Dawson said. "Our goal was eliminate their lead-off hitters, which she did six out of seven times, and she kept her pitch count low by making their hitters go after her pitches."
The Techsters have won only seven games this season but have managed three in their last six outings. Dawson feels the recent success is due to the team's rising confidence level.
"Our players expect to go and play better," she said. "They no it takes more than one run to win a game and they go in knowing they can produce."
Tech returns to action Wednesday with a doubleheader at home against I-20 rival University of Louisiana-Monroe at 3 p.m.
