Tech Drops Second WAC Road Contest at NevadaBoxscore RENO, Nev. ? Louisiana Tech got on the board with an own goal in the first half, but an offensive onslaught by Nevada led to a 4-1 Wolf Pack victory on Sunday at Mackay Stadium.
?We had a team physically stronger and physically faster than us today,? Tech coach
Kevin Sherry said. ?We make individual stupid mistakes in the back and we get punished.
?
Kiva Gresham and
Kat McCullough, they gave every ounce of energy, effort, heart?they gave everything. They refused to lie down and die.
?We know that we are the worst physically conditioned team in the conference. We also know that can?t be changed this year. We were behind the 8-ball in preseason. With four or five months of hard work, we can get to this level. And once we get our conditioning up, we can improve our technical play. Then we can compete in this conference.?
Sophomore goalkeeper
Tara Gavlak equaled her career-best effort with eight saves in the contest. Gavlak now has 23 saves in the Lady Techsters? last three games.
Nevada got on the board in the 20th minute when Kenishia Warren put a header past Gavlak to give the Wolf Pack a 1-0 lead. Jill Erickson would take a corner kick from Jessica Thompson and put it in the net to increase the lead to 2-0.
After a long punt downfield by Gavlak in the 32nd minute, a Nevada defender attempted to clear the ball but headed it past her own keeper for an own goal, cutting the Nevada lead to 2-1. It was the first own goal for Louisiana Tech this season.
But the Wolf Pack would tack on two more goals in the second half, one at 64:15 on a free kick from Vanessa Mann and the other by Thompson at 73:11.
The Lady Techsters will return to Ruston this weekend as they play host to San Jose State on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium.
