Techsters Down Alcorn State 9-0
RUSTON ? Carly White was given a second chance and Louisiana Tech?s senior first baseman came through.
White, who had popped out for what appeared to be the final out in the bottom of the first inning and her team leading 2-0, got to hit over after Louisiana Tech head coach Sarah Dawson appealed an incorrect Alcorn State scorecard.
And with two runners on White took advantage of the ?do over? and launched a three-run home run over the left field wall propelling Tech (3-0) to a five-run first inning and an eventual 9-0 win over the Lady Braves Sunday afternoon at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
The win gave Tech the weekend sweep of Alcorn State after capturing Saturday?s doubleheader 8-4 and 5-1.
?This weekend was a total team effort,? Dawson said. ?To win in the fashion we won in today was a step up from yesterday. We performed at the level we need to be successful when we face tougher competition.?
Tech added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning off of Alcorn State starter Corina Pendleton (0-2), who allowed nine runs ? six earned ? on seven hits and four walks in only 3.0 innings of action.
White led Tech?s seven-hit attack in the shortened contest (five run rule) with two hits and five runs batted in while Emma Barnes, Danielle Sheridan, Lyndsey McIlwain, Rochelle Sandberg and Ashley Cameron each added one hit. Cameron and Sandberg each drove in two runs for Tech.
?The girls made the adjustments we asked them to make and we are very proud of their execution,? Dawson said.
Sophomore Krissi Oliver (2-0) picked up the win for Tech, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out three in 3.0 innings of action. After getting into a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning, Oliver settled down and coasted to her second win of the weekend.
?I was proud of Krissi for bouncing back after yesterday,? Dawson said. ?She struggled early today, but she showed her experience by making the pitches to get out of the inning.?
Courtney Avery, who missed the majority of last season due to an injury, came on in relief and allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out two in the final two innings of action.
?It was good to see Courtney out there,? Dawson said. ?She did a good job of throwing strikes and had good movement on her pitches.?
Tech returns to action Tuesday when the Lady Techsters hosts Stephen F. Austin in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
