Techsters Win Pitchers Duel
Boxscore I Boxscore II
BATON ROUGE, La. ? One day after the two teams combined to score 35 runs, Louisiana Tech blanked Southern Mississippi 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Tiger Park in the Easton Purple and Gold Challenge.
Tech (11-8) lost to 6th ranked LSU 10-1 in the first game of the day for the team.
The Lady Techsters, which saw USM score 17 runs in the top of the seventh inning in a 24-11 loss on Saturday, received an outstanding pitching performance from sophomore Krissi Oliver (7-5) and some timely hitting by freshman shortstop Amberly Waits in Sunday?s victory.
?I?m proud of this team,? said head coach Sarah Dawson. ?What happened to us yesterday doesn?t happen to anyone, even when you are talking about the No. 1 team in the country playing the worst team in the country.
?Our kids did a good job of not letting (that one inning) carry over and affecting us the rest of the tournament. They?ve learned that each game is its own and nothing carries over, good or bad.?
With Sunday?s game scoreless heading into the top of the seventh inning, Kylie Bassett registered a one-out infield single before Lyndsey McIlwain reached on a fielder?s choice with Bassett being thrown out at second.
Carly White then reached on an error by USM as McIlwain advanced to second. Waits then followed with a run-scoring single to right field, giving Tech a 1-0 lead.
?In her first bat of the game, Amberly hit a line drive that their second baseman jumped up and caught,? Dawson said. ?We felt like if she got that same pitch, she could do something with it and she came through for us.?
Oliver retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before a walk and single put runners on first and second. However, Oliver retired the next batter on a ground out to third base as the Lady Techsters hung on for the win.
Oliver scattered five hits and five walks while striking out one in the complete game shutout.
?Krissi made the pitches when it counted,? Dawson said. ?She allowed some base runners, but she got some big outs. Our defense also made some big plays.?
Rochelle Sandberg registered two hits for Tech while Regan Clark, Bassett and Waits each added one hit.
In the first game of the day, the 6th ranked Tigers proved to be too much for Tech, downing the Lady Techsters 10-1 in five innings.
The Lady Techsters lone run came in the top of the fourth inning as Ashley Cameron drove home pinch runner Sarah Offut with a two-out double.
Cameron and Carly White registered the lone hits of the game for Tech.
Freshman Mandi Bertsch (4-2) picked up the loss for Tech, allowing seven runs ? six earned ? on three hits and six walks in 2.0 innings of work.
