RUSTON -- The Louisiana Tech women's soccer team was awarded the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Team Academic Award for the 2007-08 academic year.
It is the first time the soccer program has achieved this honor. A total of 361 teams (102 men, 259 women) earned the award. To be recognized, a team was required to have a grade point average of at least 3.0. The Lady Techsters exceeded that by posting a cumulative GPA of 3.10.
Tech head women's soccer coach Kevin Sherry is thrilled by his team's latest accomplishment.
"Since this is the first time a team academic award has been achieved by the soccer program, I am very proud," Sherry said. "As a coaching staff, we are not only concerned with the performance of the team on the field and how they play, but also their attitude towards their academics.
"With the team setting a new record for most wins in a season and earning the award from the NSCAA, this is exciting for the future. We have set even higher goals for the present year and are well on course to achieve those goals. All of the credit must go towards the student-athletes for working so hard and being such fine ambassadors for Louisiana Tech University."
