After helping the Lady Techsters earn a 4-0 victory against Northwestern State in Tech's home opener on Feb. 11, we interviewed junior Kylie Bassett for this week's installment of "Five Minutes with a Student-Athlete." The infielder spoke about her love for her family, California and her mom's turkey sandwiches.
LATechSports: Where are you from?
Bassett: I am from Vista, Calif.
LATechSports: Do you have a nickname?
Bassett: As I was growing up, my nickname was bug, but now people call me Ky.
LATechSports: What are you majoring in?
Bassett: I am majoring in kinesiology, and this fall I will start working on my master's in sports performance.
LATechSports: What do you enjoy the most about Tech?
Bassett: I enjoy the friendly atmosphere, the beautiful campus and the brick architecture. We do not have very many brick buildings in California because of the chance of earthquakes.
LATechSports: What are your plans after college?
Bassett: I am planning on attending a physical therapy school in Southern California.
LATechSports: What is your greatest achievement?
Bassett: I would have to say battling back from all my injuries. It has not been easy.
LATechSports: Who inspires you?
Bassett: My sister Brittany because she has worked so hard to get to where she is at today. I feel fortunate to have such an amazing sister to look up to.
LATechSports: What was your first job?
Bassett: I worked in the media center for my school district in California.
LATechSports: What are your hobbies?
Bassett: I love going to the beach, shopping and camping with my family.
LATechSports: If you could spend a day with one person, who would it be?
Bassett: My little sister Camille because she is amazingly talented and says some of the funniest things!
LATechSports: What is your favorite part of a road trip?
Bassett: There is not anything in particular I can point out, but I always enjoy looking back at all the memories we have had on our road trips.
LATechSports: When did you start playing softball and why?
Bassett: My parents signed me up to play softball and soccer at the age of five. Ever since I was that age, I have always enjoyed playing.
LATechSports: What is your all-time favorite sports moment?
Bassett: I would have to definitely say winning the WAC tournament last year!
LATechSports: What song or artist do you listen to before a game?
Bassett: I don't really have a specific song or artist I listen to before a game, but I listen to a variety of artists on my iPod.
LATechSports: Who do you contribute your success to in your sport?
Bassett: My mom and dad because they have given me unconditional love and support. They have also pushed me to do my best. I am so thankful for them because I would not be where I am now if it were not for them.
LATechSports: Did you choose your jersey number for a particular reason?
Bassett: I have always worn the number 14, but I really do not have a reason as to why I have.
LATechSports: Would you ever do something extreme or adventurous?
Bassett: Yes, I really want to snowboard. One day, my dad and I are planning on sky diving.
LATechSports: Have you ever met a celebrity?
Bassett: I have met Shawn Merriman from the San Diego Chargers and Cobi Jones, former Olympian and Major League Soccer player.
LATechSports: If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
Bassett: I would live in Southern California.
LATechSports: What is your favorite movie?
Bassett: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
LATechSports: What is your favorite food?
Bassett: My mom's turkey sandwiches
LATechSports: What was the strangest costume you wore for Halloween?
Bassett: One year, I dressed up as a penguin.
LATechSports: If you had the opportunity to live your life to the fullest for only one day, what would you do?
Bassett: I would go to Fiji and soak up the sun!
LATechSports: What is the funniest prank played on you or by you?
Bassett: My freshman year, I brought a whoopee cushion with me on one of our road trips. Everyone knew I had it, but Coach Dawson. Once I sat on the cushion, she gave me a reaction that was priceless. I could not stop laughing.
LATechSports: If you were stranded on a beach, what five things would you need to survive?
Bassett: I would need my iPod to listen to music, a towel to dry off after I take a swim, suntan lotion so I don't burn, my dog Molly to keep me company and chocolate because I love it!
