WACO -- UL-Monroe plated six runs in the top of the third inning and hung on for a 7-5 win over Louisiana Tech in the first game of the QTI Invitational at Getterman Stadium Friday.
The Warhawks (6-11) knocked Tech starter Krissi Oliver (2-5) around early and often as the senior allowed six earned runs on nine hits in only 2.1 innings of action. Oliver surrended a three-run home run to Molly McNeill with one out in the third which gave ULM a 5-3 lead. Michelle Farrell-Fink followed with a double to centerfield, knocking Oliver from the game.
Sophomore Wanda Malone came on in relief and scattered five hits while allowing only one more run over the final 4.2 innings of action.
After ULM took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Megan Miller. Tech answered in the bottom of the second inning as Danielle Sheridan drove home two runs with a triple to right centerfield plating Emma Barnes and Heather Doiron. Amberly Waits then followed with an RBI single to center, giving Tech a 3-1 lead.
However, the advantage was short-lived as ULM exploded for six runs on seven hits in its half of the third with the big blow being the three-run home run by McNeill.
The score remained 7-3 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Lady Techsters added two more runs.
Pinch hitter Elizabeth Franklin led the frame off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Summer Young. After Doiron struck out, Barnes singled to drive home Franklin making the score 7-4. Barnes moved to second on the throw and then scored one batter later on a single by Waits.
With the tying runs on second and third, ULM starter Kandace Causey retired Kylie Bassett on a pop up to short stop ending the sixth.
After ULM failed to score in the seventh, Jessica Kirby and Young both drew walks in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the tying runs on base before Causey induced a fly ball out by pinch hitter Allie Geisler to end the game.
Causey (3-5) picked up the win despite walking eight batters and surrendering eight hits.
Sheridan and Waits each recorded two hits and two RBI to lead the Lady Techsters offensively.
