LAFAYETTE -- Louisiana Tech had a golden opportunity to knock off 14th ranked UL-Lafayette Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader but the Lady Techsters fell 3-2 in nine innings.
Tech (12-11) led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning against the Ragin Cajuns (13-2), but starter Krissi Oliver -- who had been stellar through the first six innings of work -- was unable to hold the lead.
UL-Lafayette recorded back-to-back singles to lead off the frame before scoring its first run on a double down the left field line. After an innocent ground out back to the pitcher, the Ragin Cajuns tied the game on a sacrifice fly to centerfield sending the game into extra innings.
The Ragin Cajuns plated the game-winning run off of Tech reliever Wanda Malone in the bottom of the ninth inning on a one-out single to right field.
LA Tech took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Amberly Waits off of Ragin Cajun starter Ashley Brignac. The home run came after Danielle Sheridan reached on a two-out error by UL-Lafayette.
Tech had a chance to extend the lead in the top of the seventh inning by loading the bases with only one out, but Kylie Bassett and Oliver both struck out to end the threat.
Tech returns to action Thursday when its hosts Alcorn State in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at the Lady Techster Softball Complex..
