RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech sophomore Meghan Krieg struck out a career-high 14 batters and pitched the Lady Techsters to an 8-1 win over Hawaii in the second game of a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday.
Hawaii won the first game of the day 3-0 behind a no-hitter by freshman hurler Stephanie Ricketts.
Krieg (8-3) allowed only one run on three hits and three walks in the complete-game performance.
Tech (14-13, 1-1 WAC) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning as Emma Barnes scored on a two-out error by Hawaii shortstop Richie-Anne Titcomb on a ground ball by Kylie Bassett.
The Lady Techsters then added three more runs in the third inning on RBI doubles by Danielle Sheridan and Amberly Waits off Hawaii starter Courtney Baughman and an RBI infield single by Jessica Kirby off Ricketts, who came on in relief.
Hawaii (12-17, 1-1 WAC) threatened to get back into the game in the top of the fourth inning as the Rainbow Wahine loaded the bases on two walks and a passed ball on a strike out that would have ended the inning, but Krieg struck out Dara Pagaduan to end the threat.
UH scored their only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles by Julie Franklin and Tanisha Milca before Krieg retired the next two batters to keep the score 4-1.
Tech the put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs on only one hit as the Lady Techsters capitalized on two walks and one UH error in the frame.
Barnes led Tech with two hits while Sheridan, Waits, Bassett and Kirby each registered one hit.
In the first game of the day, Ricketts blanked LA Tech allowing only one base runner the entire game -- a walk to Bassett in the fifth inning.
Hawaii scored all three of its runs in the top of the second inning as the Rainbow Wahine capitalized on some wildness by Tech starter Krissi Oliver, who walked three batters in the frame.
Titcomb and Duhaylonsod each registered RBI singles while Milca drew a bases loaded walk.
Oliver (5-8) was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out seven batters in 7.0 innings of action.
Tech and Hawaii play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 3 p.m.
