HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Junior Meghan Krieg pitched a gem but it wasn't enough as Louisiana Tech fell 1-0 to Notre Dame Saturday afternoon in their second game of the Southern Miss Mizuno Classic.
Krieg (1-1) allowed only one unearned run while scattering two hits and two walks over 6.0 innings of work while adding seven strikeouts against the Fighting Irish.
However, it was her own error in the bottom of the third inning that allowed the game's only run to be scored as Tech dropped its second one-run game of the day.
With the two teams scoreless entering the bottom of the third, Notre Dame's Sadie Pitzenberger singled and advanced to second while teammate ??? Maldonado was thrown out at third base.
Katie Fleury then reached on a throwing error by Krieg, which allowed Pitzenberger to score from second base, giving the Irish a 1-0 lead. Notre Dame's only two hits of the game came during the third inning as Krieg then retired nine of the next 11 batters she faced over the final three innings of work with two Fighting Irish reaching base on an error and a walk.
Notre Dame pitcher Jody Valdivia was spectacular in the circle, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out 13 in the complete-game victory. Valdivia pitched a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Christina Gamboa singled with one out in the frame.
Amberly Waits walked to put runners on first and second with two outs before Kylie Bassett struck out swinging to end the threat.
Tech (2-2) mounted one final threat in the top of the seventh inning as Heather Doiron and Val Quiroga recorded back to back singles with one out. After Molly Goza struck out for the second out of the inning, pinch hitter Meghan Knowles drove a ball deep to left field where Notre Dame outfielder Brianna Jorgensborg made the catch at the fence, ending the game.
Through two starts and three appearances in the circle, Krieg has not allowed an earned run this season while allowing only seven hits in 14.0 innings of action.
Tech returns to the field Sunday when they face Alcorn State at 2 p.m. and Southern Mississippi at 7 p.m.
