LAKE CHARLES - After defeating Buffalo 5-2 to begin the day, Louisiana Tech fell twice in the first day of the McNeese State Cowgirl Classic.

The Lady Techsters (4-5) lost 11-3 to McNeese State and then 10-7 to Buffalo in the final game of the day.

In the victory over the Bison, Louisiana Tech banged out a season-high 10 hits to down Buffalo.

Amberly Waits recorded three hits while Jessica Kirby added two hits and two RBI as the Lady Techsters came back from an early 1-0 deficit to win the contest.

Tech plated three runs on five hits in the fourth inning. Kendra Harmon doubled to lead off the frame and then scored on Waits RBI single, tying the game at 1-1. Kirby then singled with one out, scoring Waits and giving the Lady Techsters a 2-1 advantage.

Christina Gamboa then drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Kirby as Tech led 3-1. Both teams added a single run in the fifth inning before Kirby finished the scoring with an RBI double scoring Waits in the top of the seventh inning.

Junior Meghan Krieg (3-2) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out eight.

In the second game of the day, McNeese State scored 11 runs on 13 hits off of three LA Tech pitchers. Krieg got the start for Tech, allowing two runs - one earned - on two hits and two walks in 2.0 innings.

Michelle Jones then came on in relief, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks in 2.1 innings of action. Janna Frandup then took over in the circle in the fifth inning, and allowed six runs - five earned - on six hits and one walk over the final 2.2 innings of work.

The Cowgirls built a 5-0 lead before LA Tech finally got on the scoreboard as Heather Doiron recorded a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring Kirby who had reached base after being hit by a pitch. The hit by Doiron was the first of the day by LA Tech off Cowgirl starter Megan Bond.

Waits then cut the lead to 5-3 with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

McNeese State erupted for six runs on six hits and one error in the top of the seventh inning to put the game away.

Doiron and Waits home runs were the only hits of the game for the Lady Techsters.

In the final game of the afternoon, Buffalo built a big lead and then withstood a furious Lady Techster rally for a 10-7 victory.

The Bison scored five runs in the third inning on only two hits as Tech walked two, hit a batter and recorded a costly error as only two of the runs were earned.

After Buffalo upped the advantage to 4-0, Tech scored a lone run in the fourth as Waits tripled and then scored on a fielders choice ground ball by Kirby.

The Bison then added two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to lead 10-1 before LA Tech started playing long ball.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kylie Bassett led off with a solo home run as Tech cut the lead down to 10-2. Waits then singled and advanced to third on back-to-back ground outs. With the Techsters one out away from the game ending early due to the eight-run rule, freshman Meghan Knowles singled home Waits to make the score 10-3.

The score remained 10-3 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Bassett hit a two-out, two-run home run to right field, making the score 10-5. Waits then walked before Kirby launched a two-run home run to make the score 10-7.

Valerie Quiroga grounded out to end the game.

Bassett led Tech with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI and two runs scored while Waits added two hits and three runs. Kirby added one hit and three RBI.

Krieg (3-4) took the loss allowing eight runs - four earned - on six hits and two walks while striking out three. Frandrup came on in relief, allowing two earned runs on four hits.

Tech returns to action Sunday with a doubleheader against McNeese State starting at noon.
