FAYETTEVILLE -- Southern Illinois-Edwardsville scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Louisiana Tech 7-5 Saturday in the first game of the Arkansas Razorback Invitational.
Tech then fell 5-2 to Arkansas despite allowing only two hits to the Razorbacks in the game.
In the first game of the day, Tech built a 3-0 lead as junior hurler Meghan Krieg cruised through the first five innings. However, SIUE (12-10) scored four runs with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to grab a 4-3 lead.
The Lady Techsters answered in the bottom of the sixth inning as Sarah Offutt doubled home two runs with two outs as LA Tech retook a 5-4 lead. Offutt's big hit scored Meghan Knowles and Molly Goza who led the frame off with singles.
SIUE had an answer again in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits and one key LA Tech error.
Tech took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Heather Doiron which plated Knowles who had singled. The Lady Techsters upped the advantage to 2-0 in the third on a Jessica Kirby run-scoring single which scored Amberly Waits, who had singled and stolen second base.
The lead increased to 3-0 in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Waits, scoring Kendra Harmon who had walked and advanced to second on an illegal pitch.
Krieg took the loss, allowing seven runs - six earned - on eight hits and five walks while striking out five.
Waits (2 hits, 1 run, 1 RBI), Knowles (2 hits, 1 run), Kirby (1 hit, 1 RBI), Goza (1 hit, 1 run), Doiron (1 hit, 1 RBI) and Offutt (1 hit, 2 RBI) led Tech's eight-hit attack.
In the second game of the day, Krieg (7-7) lost her third two-hitter of the year.
Arkansas grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run single by Stephanie Brewer with two outs in the inning. Brewer's single came with the bases loaded as Krieg walked two batters and hit a third.
The Razorbacks added three more runs in the fourth inning as a walk and a hit batter put runners on first and second before Sandra Smith homered to centerfield with two outs, giving Arkansas a 5-0 advantage.
Tech scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Kylie Bassett and a RBI groundout by Waits.
Kendra Harmon (2 hits, 1 run), Bassett (1 hit, 1 RBI), Waits (1 RBI), Christina Gamboa (1 hit) led Tech offensively.
Krieg allowed five earned runs on two hits and seven walks while striking out 10.
