WACO, Texas - Baylor piled on seven runs in the first three innings and took advantage of a Louisiana Tech team that was playing its fifth game in seven days as the Bulldogs dropped a 12-4 decision at Baylor Tuesday night in Waco.
Trevor Petersen (2-1) was credited with his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings pitched for Louisiana Tech (8-4), who dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.
Louisiana Tech scored four runs on 10 hits throughout the game but only put two runners in scoring position in the final six innings of the game. Mark Threlkeld paced the Tech offense with a 2-for-4 outing form the plate, driving in one run. Willie Kempf (2-1) was took the win for the Bears (8-6), who avenged last week's 14-6 loss to Tech. Kempf allowed only one hit and struck out four in 2.1 innings of work on the mound.
Brooks Pinckard led the Baylor charge with a 3-for-4 day, scoring twice while Logan Vick hit 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Bulldog bats started hot as Kyle Rolliard led the game off with a triple to right center and scored on Mark Threlkeld's RBI groundout to short in the next at bat, giving Tech the 1-0 advantage before Baylor struck back with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Tech surged into the lead for the second and final time in the game as Clint Stubbs drove in a run off a fielder's choice with two on and no one out in the top of the second. Clint Ewing followed with his second home run of the season, sending a two-run shot over the left center wall less than a week after his home run at Baylor on March 3 sealed Tech's victory over the Bears.
Baylor would retake the lead in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Vick and a sacrifice fly by Chris Slater. The Bears would not relinquish the lead again. Landis Ware hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third and Baylor would manufacture five runs over the final three innings to seal the 12-4 win.
Louisiana Tech returns to the diamond on March 12 with a 7 p.m. (CT) game at New Mexico in Albuquerque.
