SAN JOSE, Calif. - Louisiana Tech will face the surprise team of the Western Athletic Conference this weekend when the Lady Techsters travel to face San Jose State Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
San Jose State is 23-11 on the season but 0-3 in league play after being swept by Hawaii this past weekend by scores of 3-2 (10), 7-3 and 7-1. Head coach Peter Turner's team has posted impressive wins over Oklahoma, Virginia, Charlotte (twice) and New Mexico and is 5-1 at Spartan Softball Complex this season.
The Spartans boast one of the top offenses in the WAC, sporting a team average of .312 while leading the Western Athletic Conference with 53 steals in 55 attempts.
San Jose State has six regulars batting over .300 led by Kelli Fangonilo (.396, 3 HR, 21 RBI, 7-7 SB), Julianne Aiello (.380, 1 HR, 11 RBI), Sarah Taylor (.375, 2 HR, 23 RBI, 9-10 SB), Brittany McConnell (.365, 7 HR, 36 RBI), Alyssa Sulay (.349, 15-15 SB), and Ursula Lopez (.341, 1 HR, 23 RBI).
In the circle, SJSU relies on four pitchers, including Amanda Pridemore (11-2, 2.80 ERA), Jaclyn Imhof (7-5, 4.75), Jennifer Ames (4-2, 4.93) and Elyssa Fox (1-2, 3.04).
LA Tech (15-10, 2-1 WAC) looks to go on the road for the first time in league play after winning two of three against Utah State in Ruston last weekend.
Tech will continue to ride the arm of junior Meghan Krieg (11-9, 2.27 ERA) who has logged 129.2 innings of work this year. Krieg leads the WAC with 165 strikeouts and needs only 90 more strikeouts to break the 24-year-old single season record set by Stacey Johnson in 1986.
Freshmen Michelle Jones (4-1, 4.60 ERA) and Janna Frandrup (0-0, 8.27 ERA) should both see some time in the circle this weekend.
Offensively, Amberly Waits (.416, 5 HR, 17 RBI, 25 runs) and Meghan Knowles (.400, 2 HR, 14 RBI) have been the most consistent threats while Kylie Bassett (.224, 7 HR, 17 RBI, 23 runs) and Jessica Kirby (.216, 3 HR, 25 RBI) have also provided scoring punch to the lineup.
San Jose State leads the all-time series 15-13 although the Lady Techsters swept a three-game series from the Spartans last season in Ruston.
