DENTON - Kendra Harmon recorded two hits and Allie Geisler an RBI but it wasn't enough as Texas-Arlington downed Louisiana Tech 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Lovelace Field in the final game of the North Texas Courtyard Classic.
Tech (5-16) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Harmon led off with a single and then advanced to second on a fielding error by the UTA infield on Christina Gamboa's sacrifice bunt attempt. After Janna Frandrup sacrificed both runners to second and third, Geisler hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield plating the first run of the game.
The lead was short-lived as the Lady Mavs doubled home a run in the bottom of the first inning off of Lady Techster starter Meghan Krieg.
After Tech went quietly in the top of the second, UTA registered three straight two-out hits in the bottom of the frame, including a two-run double as the Lady Mavs grabbed a 3-1 advantage.
Harmon singled and Gamboa drew a walk to put a pair of runners on in the top of the third inning, but Lady Mavs starter Callie Collins retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
In the top of the fourth, Molly Goza singled and stole second but Collins once again pitched her way out of the jam by recording back-to-back strikeouts.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Krieg walked the leadoff batter and was then relieved by freshman Erin Kipp. After recording the first out of the inning, Kipp allowed a single to left field that was misplayed, allowing an unearned run to score and giving UTA a 4-1 lead.
Frandrup, who was named to the all-tournament team for the third time this year, led the top of the sixth off with a single but was stranded on first base as Collins retired the next three batters in order.
UTA added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on two hits, including an RBI triple.
Collins walked one batter in the top of the seventh while striking out three more to end the game. The UTA pitcher allowed only four hits and two walks in 7.0 innings while recording 11 strikeouts to pick up the win.
Krieg (1-9) picked up the loss, allowing four runs - three earned - on five hits and three walks while striking out three in 3.0 innings of action. Kipp allowed one run on three hits over the final 3.0 innings of work.
