OXFORD - Senior Clinton Shepard shot a two-round total of one-under-par 143 to tie for ninth place at the 2011 BancorpSouth Intercollegiate hosted by Ole Miss at Reunion Golf and Country Club Monday and Tuesday.
The event, which was shortened to only 36 holes after Monday's second round was postponed due to inclement weather that passed through the area, featured some of the top teams in the country as 10 of the 15 participants entered the week ranked in the Top 100 in the nation.
Head coach Jeff Parks Bulldogs shot a two-round team total of seven-over-par 584 to finish seventh although Louisiana Tech was only four shots from third place in the prestigious event.
"We beat four teams ranked in the Top 100 in the country," Parks said. "With us losing 18 holes due to the weather, the field was really tight and only a few strokes separated some quality teams. We finished just a few shots out of third place. It would have been nice to have been able to play all 54 holes to see how we fared, but overall, I'm pleased with the effort.
"We are all far from satisfied though as our goal is to always win every time we step on the course. The guys will continue working on their putting as that is one area that we really need to improve on as we get closer to the WAC Championships."
Sam Forgan joined Shepard in the Top 20 of the individual competition, firing back to back 73s to finish tied for 17th. Cody Santone (76-73=149, T41st), Patrick Blunt (74-75=149, T41st) and Jonathan Bale (78-72=150, T46th) rounded out the Bulldogs scoring at the event.
Southeastern Louisiana's Philipp Westermann won the event with a two round total of six-under-par 138, edging South Alabama's Lane Hulse by one stroke.
South Alabama took home the team title with a total of five-under-par 571 followed by Southern Miss (577), Southeastern (580), UCF (581), Ole Miss (582), Middle Tennessee (583), Tech (584), Central Arkansas (585), UNCG (586), Memphis (586), UAB (588), Vanderbilt (597), Rice (599), Mississippi State (608) and Jackson State (613).
Tech will travel to San Marcos, Texas next week to compete in the Jim West Intercollegiate Sunday through Tuesday.
