HATTIESBURG - Sam Forgan and Travis Wilmore both shot even par totals of 142 to lead Louisiana Tech in the first two rounds of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Mississippi at the Hattiesburg Country Club Monday.
Forgan and Wilmore both shot opening rounds of one-over-par 72 before each taking two strokes off their cards during the afternoon rounds with 70s. They are both tied for 17th place among 84 golfers competing in the fall opener for the 15 teams.
Senior Cody Santone shot a two-round total of three-over-par 145 which included an even par 71 during the second 18 holes of play on the day.
"We had a number of guys play some steady golf," said Tech head coach Jeff Parks. "We just didn't have anyone go really low like some of the other teams today. I was glad to see Travis and Sam play well. We will just have to come out tomorrow and improve and see if we can move up."
As a team, Tech shot a nine-over-par total of 577 as the Bulldogs are currently in 10th place in the 15-team event. Tech shot eight-over-par (292) as a team in the morning round before shaving seven strokes off during the afternoon round (285).
Ole Miss leads the event through 36 holes with a team total of 10-under-par 558 followed by South Alabama (560), UL-Lafayette (562), UAB (563), Memphis (564), Southern Miss (571), Mississippi State (571), UALR (573), Sam Houston State (573), LA Tech (577), Southeastern Louisiana (578), Arkansas State (582), Rice (589), UL-Monroe (594) and McNeese State (597).
Jack Lempke (74-74=148, T54th) and Jonathan Bale (76-77=153, T71st) rounded out the team scoring for the Bulldog while true freshman Chandler Vilcheck shot a 153 (76-77) playing as an individual in his first collegiate event.
