LAFAYETTE - Louisiana Tech used a four-run fifth inning to record a 7-5 come-from-behind win over Northwestern State Friday afternoon in the Lady Techsters first game of the Mardi Gras Classic.
Junior Michelle Jones (2-1) picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Techsters, allowing five runs - four earned - on seven this and two walks while striking out two.
Tech took an early 2-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Meghan Knowles in the bottom of the first that scored Kendra Harmon who led the game off with a single and an RBI single by Allie Geisler in the third that scored pinch runner Janine Godwin.
After cruising through the first three innings, Jones ran into trouble in the top of the fourth inning as the Demons scored five runs on three hits and one LA Tech error to take a 5-2 lead.
Tech answered in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Janna Frandrup walked and then Dacia Hale and Knowles singled to load the bases with no outs. Geisler followed with an RBI single that plated one, but Hale was thrown out at home trying to score from second.
Katelynn Hill then singled to load the bases and Hailey Winter drove home the second run of the frame with an RBI single up the middle, cutting the deficit to 5-4. After Tricia Van Winkle was retired for the second out, pinch runner Erin Kipp and Hill both scored on consecutive wild pitches as Tech took a 6-5 lead.
Tech added an insurance run in the sixth as Amanda Krueger doubled and eventually advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Krueger scored on a wild pitch as Tech led 7-5 heading to the final frame.
Jones surrendered a leadoff single in the seventh but then induced a double play and a groundout to end the game.
Harmon and Geisler both led Tech with two hits while Krueger, Frandrup, Hale, Knowles Hill and Winter each registered one hit. Geisler recorded a pair of RBIs while Knowles and Winter each added one.
