Box Score Game 2
RUSTON - Dacia Hale's run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference as Louisiana Tech defeated McNeese State 4-3 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Monday evening at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
The Cowgirls came back in game two to win 5-4 to split the twinbill.
Melanie Goff (1-5) picked up her first win of the season in the circle, allowing only three runs on six hits and one walk while also scoring the game-winning run.
After McNeese State (29-18), a team that defeated defending national champion Arizona State earlier this year, tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, Goff doubled with one out in the bottom of the frame and moved to third on a single by Katelynn Hill.
Meghan Knowles walked to load the bases and then Hale lined a single to left field, scoring Goff with the go-ahead run.
Goff allowed a two-out single in the top of the seventh before retiring the final Cowgirls hitter on a ground ball to shortstop to end the game.
McNeese State took an early 2-0 lead in the game on a two-out, two-run home run by Ashley Modzelewski over the left field wall in the top of the first inning. Tech tied the game in the first on an RBI single by Janna Frandrup and throwing error by Tiffany Denham on an infield single by Goff.
Sophomore Erin Kipp then gave Tech a 3-2 lead when she lined her third home run of the season over the left field wall in the bottom of the third inning.
Goff kept McNeese State off the scoreboard through the middle innings before surrendering a game-tying single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
Kipp went 2-for-3 with the home run and two runs scored while Goff was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Amanda Krueger, Frandrup, Hill, Hale and Alayna Kipp each registered a hit in the win.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Tech fell behind 5-1 after three innings before fighting its way back to make it a game late.
Erin Kipp started in the circle for LA Tech and allowed five runs on six hits, including three home runs, as the Cowgirls jumped out to a four-run lead. After McNeese State took an early 2-0 lead in the second, Goff blasted her second home run of the year deep over the right field wall cutting the advantage in half.
The Cowgirls added three more runs in the top of the fourth as Kipp gave way to reliever Michelle Jones, who held McNeese State to only one hit over the final 4.0 innings of action.
Krueger led the bottom of the fourth off with a single and stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the McNeese State catcher. One out later, Goff walked and then stole second base. Krueger scored on a second throwing error by the Cowgirls catcher to make the score 5-2.
Tech added two more runs in the sixth, on an RBI double by Goff and a sacrifice fly by Hale.
Goff was 2-for-2 with two RBI while Krueger, Meghan Knowles and Kendra Harmon each registered one hit.
Tech returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Northwestern State in the final home game of the season.
