Oct. 11, 2014 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Louisiana Tech sophomore Jazmin Britos notched two wins on Friday and two more wins on Saturday to put herself into the quarterfinals of the singles A draw at the ITA Southern Regionals hosted by the University of Alabama.
Britos defeated Naomi Tran of Mississippi State in the Round of 128 in straight sets before upsetting Auburn All-American Emily Flickinger, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3.
Then on Saturday, the Villarrica, Paraguay native knocked off her third straight SEC opponent, Skylar Holloway of LSU before outlasting Southern Miss' Lisa Schneider, 7-6, 7-6, to become one of only eight remaining players in the draw.
"Jazmin has had one big win after another," head coach Chad Camper said. "She is not always playing her absolute best tennis, but she is a fighter and has been competing and picking her shots well.
"Overall, we are really gelling as a team at this tournament. Not only are we picking up wins on the court, but off the court we are coming together as one unified team."
Alexandra Starkova was narrowly close to pulling off a big victory of her own in the Round of 32. Up 5-1 in the third set to fifth-seeded Joana Vale Costa of LSU, the opponent stormed back with some brilliant tennis to sneak by Starkova, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6.
Still alive in the singles B draw is Taly Merker after she bested South Alabama's Laura Matuskova, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals.
Tarrannum Handa, Manoela Chiacchio and Marta Sramkova all picked up one singles win before being eliminated.
All three LA Tech doubles teams have lost, but not before showing continued improvement, including a couple of impressive wins by the duo of Starkova/Britos and Merker/Chiacchio.
Match play resumes Sunday morning.
