@LATechTEN Impresses at ITA Southern Regionals

Oct. 12, 2014

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Louisiana Tech may have gone into the ITA Southern Regional Championships as a sleeper team, but they left having made a big impression on the other top regional programs.

With seven Lady Techsters competing in the biggest fall tournament of the season, LA Tech notched 10 total singles wins over players from Mississippi State, Auburn, LSU, Tulane and South Alabama.

"It was a great weekend," head coach Chad Camper said. "We were competing with great teams, some from the SEC, and we were making a name for Louisiana Tech. It has been a tough fall schedule, but it was worth it. We are now going to take some time off and get ready for our last fall invite at Houston."

The final Techster remaining in the competition was Taly Merker who on Sunday bested Auburn's Reka Muller, 6-4, 6-3, before dropping a straight sets match to LSU's Amanda Atanasson in the semifinals of the main B draw.

"Taly really showed her improvement in the fall," Camper said. "She beat some great players and we hope there is more to come."

Among the many impressive wins came from Jazmin Britos who reeled off four wins in the main A draw to reach the quarterfinals, the only non-SEC player to do so. The sophomore pulled off wins over Mississippi State's Naomi Tran, followed by a three-set winner over 94th-ranked Emily Flickinger of Auburn.

She then defeated LSU's Skylar Holloway and Southern Miss' Lisa Schneider before falling to 52nd-ranked Danielle Spielmann of Alabama in straight sets.

"Even though I was not playing my best tennis, I just kept finding a way to win," Britos said.

Marta Sramkova and Alexandra Starkova also had impressive showings despite coming up short in a couple of tough losses.

Sramkova ran away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tulane's Kyla Klier but then lost to 115th-ranked Natalia Maynetto of Alabama in three sets. For Starkova, she took down Mississippi State's Timea Guibe 6-4, 6-0 before losing in a third set tiebreaker to 61st-ranked Joana Vale Costa of LSU.

The Techsters also showed improvement in doubles, particularly the duo of Taly Merker and Manoela Chiacchio who defeated UAB's No. 1 doubles team, 8-3.
