Nov. 3, 2014 HOUSTON - The Louisiana Tech tennis team rounded out the fall season this past weekend at the Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational in Houston, Texas picking up 15 wins in singles and eight in doubles, led by Marta Sramkova who went a perfect 7-0.
The event hosted by the Houston Cougars was a three-day, four-team round robin that was played at the John E. Hoff Courts on the campus of the University of Houston and at Rice's new George R. Brown Tennis Center.
LA Tech took on players from Tyler Junior College, Sam Houston State and Lamar in its section of the tournament.
"It was a great fall season," head coach Chad Camper said. "Many of our goals have been accomplished and the freshmen really finished strong at the end of this tournament. Marta saved her best tennis at the end and showed she can win higher in the lineup in singles and doubles."
On Friday, Sramkova opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Paige Murdock of Tyler JC. Also with an impressive victory was Alexandra Starkova who battled back from 4-0 down in the first set to win 12 of the next 13 games in a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Joanna Savva who is one of the top ranked junior college players in the country.
On Saturday, Sramkova moved up in the lineup to No. 2 and the result was still the same with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Sam Houston State's Fabienne Gettwart.
She then finished off the weekend with two more straight sets wins, 6-1, 6-2 versus Lamar's Katya Lapayeva and 6-4, 6-4 against Rice's Solo Zinko.
On all three days, Sramkova teamed up with Tarrannum Handa to pick up three victories.
Manoela Chiacchio matched Sramkova's effort in singles, sweeping all three days. The junior also went 2-1 in doubles teaming up with Taly Merker, the only loss coming in an 8-7 decision to Lamar at No. 1.
The Lady Techsters will not compete again until the start of the spring season which starts up in January.
