RUSTON -- Junior Kathryn Sloan netted two second half goals and Kylee Seto registered three saves in net as Louisiana Tech shutout Southern Miss, 2-0, on Sunday night at the Lady Techster Soccer complex.
The match was scoreless at halftime, but LA Tech's (9-5, 2-2 C-USA) leading striker put one past the USM keeper five minutes into the second period and then added an insurance goal with less than five minutes to play to make it a victory sweep this weekend for six points.
"Our team worked hard against a very organized, well coached and physical team tonight," head coach Kevin Sherry said. "We had to wear them down and our efforts were rightly rewarded in the end. The win gives us a good foundation to build upon with regards to C-USA qualification and we need that foundation with the most difficult of road trips coming up at FIU and FAU, two top teams with amazingly talented players in their squads."
Both squads had trouble generating scoring chances in the first half, despite them combining for nine shots.
After the midway point, the Techsters came out strong, holding possession early on until they struck for the first goal of the match.
In the 51st minute, midfielder Annabel Prior had possession in the midfield and boomed a long ball into the attacking third. The Golden Eagles' keeper Brittany Taylor hesitated and decided to not come off her line. Instead Sloan chased it down and beat her 1-v-1.
USM (3-7-3, 1-3 C-USA) immediately went on the offensive, pushing more bodies forward to try to come up with the equalizer, but defenders like Madison Doll and Makenna Johnson were able to keep the opposition from getting clean looks.
The victory was all but sealed in the 87th minute when Sloan received another long ball, this time from midfielder Charity Simmons. She was able to win the 50/50 ball from her man-marked defender and beat the keeper to the right corner.
With the two goals, Sloan now has a team-leading seven on the season and 25 for her career.
Meanwhile, Seto notched her fourth shutout of the season and the 14th of her career, the second most in program history.
The Techsters finished with a 12-10 shot advantage and a 4-1 corner kick advantage.
LA Tech continues C-USA action on Friday, Oct. 9 at Florida Atlantic.
