Sramkova Reaches Semifinals of CCI

Nov. 8, 2015

ORLANDO, Fla. ââ'¬" Facing players from some of the top teams in the country, Louisiana Tech's Marta Sramkova powered through the garnet singles flight with three victories to reach the semifinals at the USTA Clay Court Invitational at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando.

The junior started off with a solid 7-5, 6-1 win over Arijana Korach of Stetson in the round of 32. She followed that up with a marathon victory versus Daniela Ruiz Alvarez of Clemson by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

Her next challenge came in the quarterfinals against the No. 8 seed Laura Patterson of Georgia who finished last season ranked fifth in the country after reaching the NCAA Final Four.

Sramkova was up for the challenge. The two players split the first two sets, but the Slovakia native blew past her opponent in the third set, 6-0, to reach the semifinals.

The terrific run ended there against the No. 7 seed Maria Fernanda Navarro of Clemson. The junior took the first set, 6-2, but Navarro battled back to win in three sets.

"I really enjoyed competing against these big schools," Sramkova said. "I played a great tournament and my game and confidence on the court was coming together match by match. I could not have done it without the awesome support I got from my teammates and coach who helped cheer me on."

Other LA Tech was close to pulling off more upset victories, but fell just short.

Also in the garnet singles flight was Zoe Chen who drew the No. 1 seed Spencer Liang (Florida) in the opening round. Chen was able to force a third set, but dropped a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 match to the Gator.

In the gold singles flight, both Alexandra Starkova and Jazmin Britos had tough early draws as well.

In the round of 32, Starkova won the first set against Yakako Noi of Florida State, but fell 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Britos fought hard versus No. 7 seed Silvia Garcia of Georgia who is currently ranked 58th in the country by the ITA before losing, 6-4, 6-4.

"Once again, I am very proud of these players," head coach Chad Camper said. "The level of players was the highest we have ever seen and we fought till the end. It was a great way to end the fall season."

The Lady Techsters finished the national tournament with nine singles wins and two doubles wins.

They will now prepare for the 2016 spring season which starts in late January.
