RUSTON - Louisiana Tech scored eight runs over the final three innings to rally from an early deficit sending the Lady Techsters to an 8-4 win over Stephen F. Austin Tuesday night.
The victory was the 30th of the season for LA Tech, marking the first time since 2008 that the Lady Techsters have reached the mark. Tech (30-15) will look for its 31st win on Wednesday when the Lady Techsters travel to face Grambling State at 4 p.m.
With the game tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Tech rallied for four runs on four hits to put the game away.
Freshman Katie Smith led the frame off with a double and then scored on freshman Karlee Jensen's RBI single up the middle. One out later, Tori Charters reached on an infield single and then both runners scored on Anna Cross' two-run double to right centerfield, increasing the lead to 7-4. Pauline Tufi then scored Cross on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Tech overcame a sloppy defensive performance. Three errors led to a pair of unearned runs as Stephen F. Austin (18-30) grabbed a pair of two-run leads over the first four and a half innings of action.
SFA grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first as a walk, an error and two stolen bases put runners on second and third before Shalie Day drove both runs home with a single up the middle.
The scored remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning. Tufi singled and then scored on a single by Krysta Tutsch and a throwing error by SFA right fielder Annie Mehringer. Bianca Duran then singled to put runners on the corners and Janine Godwin followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
SFA responded in the top of the fifth inning against Tech reliever Bailey Allen, plating two runs on three hits and two more Lady Techsters errors.
Trailing 4-2, Tech took advantage of some wildness by SFA starter Brittany Lewis in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lewis walked the bases loaded and with two outs, Duran doubled to right field, scoring two runs and tying the game at 4-4.
Tufi came on in relief for Tech in the sixth and worked out of a 2nd and 3rd jam by inducing a ground ball out to first base. Tech then responded with the four-run sixth to pull out its fourth straight win.
