SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UTSA hit six home runs in a doubleheader Conference USA sweep as the Roadrunners defeated Louisiana Tech 5-0 and 8-4 Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
With the losses, LA Tech (31-17, 12-8 C-USA) will finish in third place in the West Division and will enter next week's Conference USA Tournament in Miami as the No. 6 seed. Tech and UTSA (34-17, 15-7) will play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
Game 1: UTSA 5, LA Tech 0
UTSA pitcher Kacy Freeze tossed a complete-game shutout as the Roadrunners used a four-run fourth inning to break open a close game as the Roadrunners defeated LA Tech 5-0.
Freeze (10-4) scattered six hits and one walk while striking out seven batters as LA Tech was shutout for only the second time all season.
Tech had an opportunity to take an early lead in the top of the first inning. However, with runners on first and third and one out, Tech hit into a double play to end the threat.
UTSA plated a single run in the bottom of the first on three straight singles, including an RBI single by Vivian Tijerina as the Roadrunners led 1-0.
The scored remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Randee Crawford and Taylor Oberg each hit two-run home runs off of Tech starter Bianca Duran as the lead ballooned to 5-0.
Tech loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning but Freeze got a ground ball out off the bat of Tori Charters for the final out of the frame.
Duran (14-12) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of action. Freshman Carolina Sanchez tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing just two hits.
Offensively, Anna Cross (2-3), Charters (1-2), Pauline Tufi (1-3), Janine Godwin (1-3) and Kassie Harris (1-3) led LA Tech at the plate.
Game 2 (UTSA 8, LA Tech 4)
Taylor Oberg hit a pair of home runs and UTSA scored eight runs in their final two at bats to post the come-from-behind win over LA Tech 8-4 to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Tech took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Pauline Tufi launched a three-run home run over the scoreboard in left centerfield. It was Tufi's 12th home run of the year.
Tech added to its lead in the top of the fifth inning when Katie Smith scored on a fielding error by UTSA third baseman Vivian Tijerina, making the score 4-0. With two outs in the frame, it appeared as if Tufi had hit her second three-run home run but UTSA centerfielder Kendall Burton with her back against the centerfield fence reached up and pulled in the fly ball, robbing Tech of three more runs.
Burton's catch changed the entire complexion of the game. UTSA responded by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, cutting the Tech lead to 4-2. The Roadrunners then erupted for six runs on seven hits, including three home runs, in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away for an 8-4 victory.
Tufi (7-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits and two walks in just 0.2 innings of action. Bailey Allen got the start, allowing two runs on nine hits and two walks in 5.0 innings of action.
UTSA outhit Tech 15-5, including 12 hits over their final two at bats.
