LA Tech vs. UTSA (Listen Live)
MIAMI - Louisiana Tech pitcher Bailey Allen and second baseman Karlee Jensen were both named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team based on a vote of the league coaches, announced the conference office Wednesday.
The announcement of the all-league team comes the day before the opening of the 2015 Conference USA Softball Tournament in Miami hosted by FIU. Louisiana Tech, the sixth seed, will open play Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CT against the No. 3 seed UTSA with the game being broadcast live on ESPN 97.7 FM and online at ESPN977.com.
Allen, a freshman from Pineville, La (Pineville HS), earned a spot on the 11-person all-frosh team after recording a 7-3 record with a 2.64 earned run average. In 69.0 innings of action, Allen struck out 57 batters while only walking 13. She recorded five of her seven wins in Conference USA games, hurling wins over Florida Atlantic, Charlotte, UTEP, North Texas and Southern Miss.
In those five wins over league foes, she held the opponent to a 0.88 earned run average while opponents batted just .171 against her. She threw a complete-game two-hitter in a win over Charlotte and a complete-game four-hitter in a win over FAU.
Jensen, a freshman from Taylorsville, Utah (Taylorsville HS), earned her spot on the team after an impressive rookie campaign that saw her bat .350 with 42 hits in 120 at bats. Jensen also registered five doubles, one triple and 23 RBI while scoring 18 runs.
She was consistently a clutch hitter for LA Tech, recording a .513 batting average (20-of-39) with runners in scoring position while 16 of her 23 RBI came with two outs. Jensen, who struck out only 10 times in 120 at bats, recorded the game-winning two-run single in Tech's 10-inning win over Southern Miss in late March.
Despite a season that saw Tech win 31 games, finish sixth (out of 12 teams) in the league and registered three sweeps in C-USA play, the Lady Techsters did not have a single player on the C-USA first or second team. Tech was one of just two teams (Southern Miss) who did not receive a first or second team honoree.
