EUGENE, Ore. - Jarrett Samuels jumped 24-7.25 (7.50m) to finish 18th in the long jump as action at the NCAA Championships began Wednesday at historic Heyward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Samuels, who made his first appearance at the NCAA Championships in the long jump Wednesday, had a top jump of 24-7.25 (7.50m) set on his second attempt as he edged Tulane's Devon Breaux by over two inches for 18th place and finished half an inch out of a top-16 finish, the cutoff for second team All-America honors.
Regardless, by reaching the semifinal round and finishing 18th Samuels will receive honorable mention All-America honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) when the formal announcement is made Monday.
This marks the second consecutive year (and ninth time overall) a Louisiana Tech jumper has received some form of All-America honors in the long jump after Jarvis Gotch garnered All-America honors last year after finishing 22nd at the NCAA Championships.
Louisiana Tech's action at the NCAA Championships continues Thursday when Charla Craddock runs in the 200m semifinals at 8:14 p.m. CT on ESPN.
