Sept. 19, 2015 MONROE, La. -- It did not take long for Zoe Chen to make an impact on the courts for Louisiana Tech.
The freshman ended up winning her singles flight with four consecutive victories and teamed up with Taly Merker to win the consolation draw in doubles on Saturday, the second and final day of the Warhawk Invitational at Raymond Heard Stadium.
After defeating fellow LA Tech teammate, Alba Escalona Perry, in three sets, Chen advanced to the finals of flight three where she bested McNeese State's Anastasija Trubich, 6-3, 6-3.
On the doubles side, Chen and Merker rebounded from a first round exit out of the main B draw to pick up two victories versus Southern Miss and ULL.
"Zoe has really come a long way in a week," head coach Chad Camper said. "She played fantastic and impressed me and the team in every match. Her doubles really improved as well, teaming up with Taly Merker."
Two other Lady Techsters ended up advancing to the finals of their singles flight as well. Alexandra Starkova took down Julia Kral of McNeese State, 6-4, 6-3, before running out of steam in the finals in flight one.
The same went for Marta Sramkova who was playing her seventh total match in the two-day tournament. She steamrolled USM's Elena Roca, 6-0, 6-0, but fell in the finals by a score of 6-4, 7-5 in flight two.
Also having an impressive tourney was Haley Ballinger. After dropping a heartbreaking three-set match in the first round of flight three, the sophomore recovered by winning two matches, including the consolation final over ULL's Melissa Burckhatt, 6-0, 6-2.
Both tandems of Jazmin Britos and Sramkova and Meryl Culot and Manoela Chiacchio were finalists in doubles flight A and B, respectively, after claiming semifinal wins on Saturday morning.
"The team had a great weekend," Camper said on the squad's performance in their first fall tournament. "With only one week of team practices, we were very successful. I think the players themselves were proud of their results. We know there is room for improvement and they are eager to improve."
LA Tech ended the invitational with an 18-12 overall mark in singles and 6-4 mark in doubles.
LA Tech will have three more weeks of practice before participating in its next fall tournament which will be the Lady Demon Invitational in Natchitoches on Oct. 9-10.
