MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- No. 6 Louisiana Tech found itself down 2-0 and on the ropes, but the Lady Techsters swung the momentum in their favor to win five straight singles matches and take the 5-2 victory over No. 11 Charlotte on Thursday afternoon at the Adams Tennis Complex.
After droppings the doubles point and losing in straight sets on court three, while also being forced to play indoors for the first time all spring due to rain, LA Tech (15-6) got a big straight sets win by Jazmin Britos on court two which sparked two three-set victories at No. 1 and No. 4.
With only four courts in play, Alba Escalona Perny and Manoela Chiacchio then began action and eventually came up with the rare double clincher as both players secured match points at the same time.
"They have a lot of heart," head coach Chad Camper said. "A lot of things were going against us. This was our first match all year indoors so that was tough. You could also see the wear and tear from the season. We have come back before but to do it at the conference tournament is amazing. It shows you the heart of the seniors and the love the team has for each other."
The Techsters came out on fire to start doubles, holding serve and breaking to open up with 2-0 leads on all three courts.
Things quickly turned though in favor of Charlotte (10-10). The 49ers reeled off six straight games to grab a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. With Britos and Marta Sramkova taking a 6-2 win themselves at No. 2, their team-leading 11th victory of the season, the doubles point came down to No. 1.
Alexandra Starkova and Zoe Chen lost four straight games, but the Techsters were able to hold serve and then break to even it up at 4-4. They had a chance to go up 5-4 on the deuce point, but got broken and Charlotte's Tai Martin delivered two clutch aces to give the 49ers the early advantage.
Things looked grim for LA Tech, especially after losing the first singles match at No. 3 in straight sets to go down 2-0. Two other courts were going into a third set and the other was on the brink of going to a third.
Britos was cruising in the first set, taking it 6-1, but the second set would go into a tiebreaker. The junior came up huge in a huge moment, winning the tiebreaker 7-2 to get the Techsters on the scoreboard.
"Jazmin came up really big," Camper said. "She has had a tough end of the year and to go out there and win as quickly as she did was big. It showed the other players the belief. Alexandra being a senior was not done yet. I felt like she could turn it around and she did. The freshman Zoe Chen winning at four was big too. We got loud. That is really what it took today."
That was when the tide turned as Chen regrouped at No. 4 after the 49ers' Sierra Stone forced a third set to win it 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 and tie the match up. Then it was Starkova at No. 1 who lost the opening set but bounced back to defeat Victoria Pahlett 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, marking her team-best 13th win.
Once the team got up 3-2, the players got louder and louder and refused to lose. Playing right next to each other, Chiacchio and Perny delivered terrific performances to clinch win No. 15 on the season with victories of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-3, respectively.
"I was the last one to come on court so I knew that it could come down to me," Chiacchio said. "I was ready for it. I was changing my mentality from being very loud and cheering for everyone else to knowing that me and Alba had to play our hearts out. This is my last championship and I want to play as well as I can in every single moment."
LA Tech has now reached the 15-win mark for the third time in the last four years. They now advance to take on the No. 3 seed North Texas at 2 p.m. on Friday.
