April 8, 2016 RUSTON ââ'¬" No. 73 Louisiana Tech looks to get back on the winning track Saturday when it plays host to Jackson State at 1 p.m. at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.
Emotions may very well be shown before the first ball is even served as LA Tech (13-5) will honor its three seniors ââ'¬" Alexandra Starkova, Manoela Chiacchio and Taly Merker ââ'¬" in a senior day ceremony.
"These three women have seen this program excel at a national level and without their contributions, we would have never accomplished that," head coach Chad Camper said. "All three have had different, but vital roles in the program. They have been the backbone and will be truly missed."
The trio certainly wants to go out on top at home, facing JSU (7-15) as well as a home finale next Friday against Central Arkansas.
To do that, coming out with a lot of energy in doubles will be key. In the last match which resulted in a 4-2 loss to New Orleans, the team lost the doubles point and never could gain the momentum in singles.
"The loss was a wake-up call for us to clean up some of our weaknesses," Camper said. "Living the life of a ranked team was new to us and we have matured from the experience. I feel like we are back and ready to fight for every point."
Starkova, who leads the team in singles wins this season with 11, has consistently played at the No. 1 position in singles and doubles this season. Chiacchio and Merker currently have a 7-4 mark as a doubles tandem playing at the No. 3 spot.
Jackson State will be playing for the first time in over two weeks. Their last match came in a shutout loss at No. 27 Arkansas.
