Camper Selected as Louisiana Coach of the Year

June 5, 2016

RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech head coach Chad Camper has been at the helm of the women's tennis team for three years and he already has two honors on his resume having been named on Sunday as the 2016 Louisiana Coach of the Year.

He also received this accolade by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in his first year in 2014. Since then he has built LA Tech into a nationally-ranked team which they accomplished for the first time ever this past season.

The Lady Techsters finished with a 15-7 spring record, tied for the fourth most victories in program history. It marked the second time the team has reached the 15-win plateau under Camper.

One of those victories was an historic one, coming at No. 45 Georgia State which helped earn a national ranking of No. 69. The team ended up spending three weeks in the Oracle/ITA Top 75, ranked as high as No. 66 in the country after following up the GSU win with a shutout at SMU.

He shared the award with LSU's co-head coaches Julia and Michael Snell. Joining Camper as honorees by the LSWA were Alexandra Starkova and Jazmin Britos.

After being named to the second team for the past three seasons, Starkova became just the second Lady Techster in program history to be a first team selection.

The senior capped off an incredible career with 49-19 dual singles record, the third most wins and the third highest winning percentage (.721) in program history. For the 2016 spring season, she recorded a team-high 13 wins in singles while posting 10 victories in doubles, playing primarily from the No. 1 spot.

The Madrid, Spain native is now the first four-time All-Louisiana selection to go along with being the first ever to earn all-conference honors all four years.

She also came in second in the voting for Player of the Year honors.

Britos was an honorable mention selection, marking the first time the junior has been recognized by the LSWA. She registered 12 victories in dual singles, the second most behind Starkova, while also opening the spring with an eight-match winning streak playing mostly at the No. 2 position.

The Villarrica, Paraguay native also went a team-best 12-2 in doubles, recording a perfect 4-0 mark against league opponents. Two of those came in the C-USA Tournament with victories versus Charlotte and No. 71 North Texas.

All awards were voted on by the tennis media relations personnel for the annual Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
