AUSTIN -- Louisiana Tech was one out away from pulling off the win, but back-to-back RBI hits by the Texas Longhorns took the victory away.
Tech led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning with freshman Jenny Chapman in the circle. Chapman retired two of the first three batters she faced ââ'¬" walking one ââ'¬" before surrendering a long fly ball to the left field fence that went off the glove of Galaz. The tying run scored.
Texas then followed with an RBI double to left centerfield, scoring the game-winning run from second base.
"I thought Jenny had them off balance, and in hindsight, maybe I should have made a move to Preslee when they got a runner on," said Montgomery. "However, I thought our pitchers pitched well enough to win. We made way too many mistakes in the field. We were only charged with one error but we allowed too many balls to fall or get over our heads. Those are plays we normally make."
Tech jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jazlyn Crowder and Tori Charters singled and then Morgan Turkoly walked, although Turkoly was lifted after the first inning after being hit on the hand. She would not return.
With the bases loaded, Taria Page singled up the middle to score the first run as Tech led 1-0. One out later, Ali Galaz walked forcing in the second run and then Katie Smith followed with a sacrifice fly and the Lady Techsters led 3-0.
After Texas answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Tech responded in the second when senior Jessica Ball drilled an 0-2 pitch over the left centerfield fence for her first Division I home run. Tech led 4-2.
Texas tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Tech would respond in the top of the fifth inning. Galaz doubled and Smith walked and with two outs, Ball singled through the left side. Galaz scored from third but Smith was called out at home on a close play at the plate to end the inning.
The scored remained 5-4 until the bottom of the seventh when the Longhorns rallied for the win.
Chapman (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one over 1.2 innings of relief. De La Cruz got a no decision after allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks in 5.0 innings.
Offensively, Tech was led by Crowder (2-4, 1 run), Ball (2-3, 1 run, 2 RBI), Galaz (1-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Charters (1-4, 1 run), Page (1-3, 1 RBI), Smith (1 RBI), Turkoly (1 run) and Jensen (1-2).
